Immune Boosting Supplements

With the Covid-19 pandemic, you’ve seen more and more people pushing the idea of taking immune-boosting supplements. But what does immune-boosting really entail? And can you actually boost your immune system?

Immune boosting is the concept of making sure your immunity operates optimally to ensure your body can fight off infections.

How your immune system works.

Your immune system works to recognize and identify an infection or injury in the body. This causes an immune response with the goal of restoring normal function. Exercise, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep are beneficial. However, because of bad eating habits, supplements are necessary to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it requires.

The optimal status of vitamins and minerals in the body is important to maintain proper immune response to overcome infections, including Covid-19. Certain foods and medicinal plants have been shown to boost the immune system.

Please note

It is important to know that no vitamins or supplements can cure Covid-19 or other similar infections nor is there any evidence of vitamins and supplements having an effect on Covid-19 infections. Immune supporting effects of supplements and vitamins in the context of the Coronavirus and infections is theoretical.

Vitamins B, C, and D as well as Zinc may be helpful in boosting your immune system and fighting the illness in the same way they can help you overcome the flu or a cold. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C can help reduce inflammation. It can also help you fight a cold faster or ease your cold symptoms if you were taking it prior to falling sick.

Vitamin B6 is essential to keeping your immune system in top condition. Be sure to take enough Vitamin B supplements as part of your daily diet (you can easily get your daily intake from fortified cereal or in a multivitamin).

Popping a Zinc throat lozenge or taking an over-the-counter cold remedy with zinc in it (as a syrup or tablet) helps shorten the length of rhinovirus colds. Zinc also helps symptoms- nasal congestion, nasal drainage, sore throat, and cough- resolve sooner.

Garlic’s antiviral properties may be helpful in reducing the severity of symptoms in colds, flu, or Covid-19 infections. While you can eat garlic fresh, you can also take it in the form of a supplement.

Selenium is a mineral with a variety of uses, including preventing bird flu and swine flu. A potent antioxidant, selenium can boost immune function, except in those autoimmune disorders, which could experience a negative impact on their immune system.
